Fisher Park Neighborhood

Decades later, in 1978 our Fisher Park Neighborhood Association was incorporated by homeowners concerned about  residential demolitions and commercial incursion.   Today our neighborhood is comprised of almost 900 residences -- single family houses, townhomes, condos, apartments and businesses -- immediately north of downtown Greensboro.  Fisher Park residents are diverse in our ages, economic situations, and life styles while sharing an appeciation of character-filled older homes, plentiful sidewalks, mature canopy trees, and our central feature, lovely Fisher Park itself.
Our Fisher Park Neighborhood traces its beginnings to 1902 when Scotsman
Captain Basil John Fisher donated ~14 acres of his land holdings to develop a neighborhood surrounding a park.  In exchange, the city paid Fisher $5 and agreed to build a "driveway" within the donated land.  This "driveway" became our signature public streets, Fisher Park Circle, North Park Drive, and South Park Drive.  Central acres became public Fisher Park.  Captain Fisher died the following year in New York City at only 52 years of age -- his plans unfulfilled and family was left "land poor" several years as his estate slowly was settled.  Fisher's obituary stated “Capt. Fisher was an eccentric character and possessed peculiar notions of his own as to business and other matters. He was generally liked by those who knew him, for, under a rough exterior, he possessed a kindly heart.”
Soon thereafter, several local developers -- a Mr. Wharton, Mr. Latham, Mr. A.K. Moore and others began our neighborhood's development in earnest.  Residents had access to a city streetcar that ran along the center of North Elm Street to the city center. Most original buildings were completed before 1930, though even today commerical and residential buildings continue filling a few vacant properties.

Throughout each year, our neighborhood volunteers organize social events for our children and adults, distribute newsletters, fundraise through December sales of Luminaria kits, and we host house tours every few years.  (Our IRS Tax ID is 58-13651153.)
